How to Rent a Link-Belt TCC-1400 (Without Repeating My Mistakes)

I'm the person who handles rental orders and parts requests at a regional equipment dealer. I've been doing that for eight years, and in my first year I made enough mistakes to total roughly $38,000 in wasted budget. So I started keeping a checklist. Different serial numbers can have different counterweights, boom sections, and optional jibs. If you're renting blind, ask the dealer to email the machine's serial number and the matching load chart before you sign. Then check it when the crane arrives.

This is the step most people skip. They rent by model name and later discover the load chart on the machine is not the chart in the rental packet. The load chart is the basis for every lift plan. Unless the serial number on the chart matches the serial number on the crane, don't accept the machine.

I learned this in 2017, and the mistake cost about $4,200 in extra cribbing pads plus a day of schedule. Why? Because the counterweight on the delivered unit was different from what the load chart assumed. Same model, different capacity. That kind of mistake is easy to avoid with one phone call.

Step 2: Confirm the truck before the crane is loaded

One of my more expensive lessons was exactly this. The dispatcher sent our Shelby truck—the one we keep at the Shelby yard—because the regular lowboy was in the shop. Nobody checked. The Shelby truck was fine for hauling crates, but it didn't have the rating or the right trailer for a TCC-1400. We lost most of a day and paid a second transport bill.

Ask for the truck specs: GVW, trailer type, length, width, and axle spacing. Give that to the site superintendent and verify access roads, turning radius, bridge limits, and overhead power lines. As of March 2025, OSHA's Cranes and Derricks in Construction standard (29 CFR Part 1926, Subpart CC) puts the inspection responsibility on the employer, not the rental house. So if you're renting for your crew, you own the verification.

Step 3: Inspect before it leaves the yard, not after it arrives

If you're allowed to inspect at the dealer's lot, do it there. Walk around and look for hydraulic leaks, worn wire rope, cracked boom pin welds, and missing pull pins. Have the operator run the hoist, swing, and emergency stop functions. Do this even if the rental company says the machine is certified. A certification sticker doesn't show what happened during the last lift.

I once approved a 'pre-inspected' crane and found a broken counterweight shim after the first lift. The walk-around would've caught it. The repair cost two days and a lot of embarrassment. My rule now is simple: don't take the check mark, take the walk-around.

Step 4: Use the Link-Belt parts list manual before ordering anything

Another mistake that keeps showing up is ordering parts by model name instead of by serial number. The link-belt parts list manual is where everything comes together. It lists the exact part numbers, superseded numbers, and torque specs for the configuration on that specific machine. Download it before you need it, or ask the dealer for a copy. Step 5: Know the difference: backhoe vs excavator vs crane

Customers ask me this more than you'd think. A backhoe loader has a loader bucket on the front and an excavator-style arm on the back. It's a utility machine for tight jobsites. An excavator has a 360-degree rotating cab and a boom with an arm, which makes it much better for bulk digging, demolition, or lifting with the right attachment. A crane like the TCC-1400 is for lifting loads and placing them at reach and height. It is not designed to dig.
