Every couple of weeks, someone in my company sends me a rental quote or an auction link with the same note: “Can you check this one?” By title, I’m the office administrator. By function, I’ve been ordering and coordinating equipment since 2020—roughly 60 to 80 orders a year. It’s often a Link-Belt crane. Usually it’s the 90-ton class.
I’m not a crane operator or an engineer. My job starts where spec sheets usually stop: confirming the configuration, the total cost, and the support behind the machine. This FAQ is the short version I hand to project managers.
Sometimes. But only at one point on its load chart. A 90-ton Link-Belt crane can lift 90 tons in an ideal configuration—shortest usable boom, tight working radius, specified counterweights, outriggers fully extended, and level ground under the machine. Move the load farther from the swing center or add a jib, and capacity drops. Sometimes it drops quickly.
So I stopped searching for a ‘90 ton link belt crane’ by price and started asking for a load chart by serial number. First we need two numbers from the project: the heaviest single pick, including rigging, and the distance from the machine’s swing center to the load’s center of gravity. The advertised 90-ton figure is the machine’s ceiling, not its everyday work rate.
Keep in mind the machine itself is only one line on the total-cost sheet. A crane that is bigger than the job needs costs too much per day. One that is smaller costs the schedule. Tonnage has to match real lifts, not the marketing name.
People search for link belt crane models and expect one list. I order by family first. Link-Belt’s mobile crane line is commonly grouped into hydraulic truck cranes (HTC), rough-terrain cranes (RTC), and lattice-boom crawler cranes. A truck crane can drive between sites, which means you may avoid a lowboy move if the route and local laws permit. Rough-terrain cranes handle uneven job sites better, but they need a trailer to get there. Crawler cranes give you more lifting chart on soft ground and at long radius, yet moving one is a project by itself.
For a 90-ton-class job, the family is usually more important than the exact suffix in the model name. Two machines with the same rated capacity behave differently when the ground is soft, access is tight, or the crane has to sit on one site for weeks. Ask the dealer: which of these models can actually reach our pad and set up with the counterweight we need?
Configuration questions matter more than model trivia. How much main boom does the job need? Will you add a jib? Can the trucking route handle the counterweight load? A model number tells you what the crane is. The configuration tells you what it can do on your specific site.
People ask this about excavators and cranes and assume they’re the same company. The short version: Link-Belt Construction Equipment Co. is headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, and sits within the Sumitomo Heavy Industries group. Excavators sold under the Link-Belt name in North America, through LBX Company, come from the same group background. That doesn’t mean every part is interchangeable—far from it—but it gives you a place to start when checking serial number history and dealer support.
Ownership matters to me because used machines show up with no history. I ask the seller whether the current dealer recognizes the serial number and has the machine in its system. If the answer is no, I treat that as a support risk, not as a negotiating win.
I process too many invoices to trust the big number at the top of a quote. Delivery and pickup are often two separate charges. Outrigger mats, operator, rigger, permits, escort vehicles, fuel, cleanup, standby time, and weekend rate changes can all show up as line items if they weren’t agreed to upfront.

During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, one vendor’s quote looked lower until we added the trucking distance from its yard to the job site. The second vendor had a machine closer, and the delivered cost was nearly the same. The daily rate told us very little. The total cost told us everything.
Vendor claims count in that checklist too. Per FTC guidance on advertising and marketing, claims need to be truthful and substantiated. When a listing says “ready to work” or “just serviced,” I read that as a claim and ask for service orders, inspection reports, or oil analysis results. It’s not about distrust. It’s about being able to defend the purchase to finance later.
I buy both. Saying “never use aftermarket” would be lazy and probably expensive. But for hoist valves, boom pins, cylinders, and anything that keeps a load suspended, I prefer OEM or an aftermarket replacement with clear manufacturer traceability. For filters, seals, and wear parts, an established aftermarket brand can be fine when the cross-reference is verified.
The real question is what I’m actually buying. A replacement part with no brand, no datasheet, and no batch number is a gamble. If that part stops a 90-ton Link-Belt crane for a week, the part price becomes irrelevant. The cheapest part is the one that arrives today, fits, and has paperwork—not the one that just looks the same in a photo.
Local dealer support. Buyers ask about hours, condition, last service, and previous owner. They rarely ask who will answer a parts call when the crane is sitting at their site. I now call the dealer that serves the area before signing. Three questions: is this model still in the dealer’s system, which certified technician is closest to the jobsite, and what common parts are stocked locally?
We had two hours once to confirm a rental because a client moved the schedule. Normally I’d compare three quotes, but there was no time. We went with the unit whose Link-Belt dealer had a service truck twenty minutes away. So glad we made that call—the cheaper alternative was hundreds of miles from any dealer support. In hindsight, that should have been the first question, not the last. A 90-ton crane down for two weeks waiting on a part makes any initial savings disappear.
