When I first started working on heavy equipment, I assumed genuine parts were mostly a way to make customers pay for a name. I was wrong. But not for the reason you might expect.
I am the quality/compliance manager at a construction equipment company. I review parts and machine orders before they reach customers—roughly 200 unique line items a year. In 2024, I rejected about 8 percent of first deliveries. Sometimes the spec was off. Sometimes the paperwork did not match the box. Sometimes the part only looked right.
This article compares genuine Link-Belt heavy equipment parts with aftermarket parts for Link-Belt cranes, excavators, and wheel loaders. I am writing it for small contractors and one-machine rental companies, because that is where the decision gets complicated. Large fleets have procurement people. You usually don't, so here is what I check when a parts order lands on my table.
I'm not going to tell you to buy OEM for everything. I'm also not going to say aftermarket is fine for everything. Both statements are shortcuts. A part is good when it meets the specification, fits the intended machine, and has someone who will stand behind it. Whether it arrives in a Link-Belt box is one factor, not the only factor.

In Q1 2024, we received a batch of aftermarket hydraulic pump seal kits for a Link-Belt excavator. Visually, they matched the approved spec. Same o-ring sizes, same number of pieces, same basic packaging. Then one of our technicians measured the backup rings. The aftermarket ring was 0.055 inch thick; our approved spec called for 0.060 inch. In a low-pressure circuit, that difference might be harmless. In a hydraulic pump, it changes how the seal reacts under pressure. The vendor said it was within industry standard. We rejected the batch. They redid it at their cost.
Take that story with you. Genuine Link-Belt parts are made to a specific drawing. Aftermarket part makers work from an interpretation of that drawing. Some interpretations are excellent. Some are copies of a part that was already worn out.
When I first started, I thought saving money meant choosing the lowest quote every time. This is a common mistake. Wait, what I mean is I learned the hard way that low price is not the same as low cost.
One example: a contractor chose an aftermarket hydraulic filter for a Link-Belt wheel loader because it cost $36 instead of $118. The filter looked fine at the next service. Then it collapsed internally and sent debris through the pump. The pump repair estimate was about $7,800. I cannot say with certainty that the genuine filter would have survived differently. I can say the $82 saving became two weeks of downtime.
I am not telling you to avoid aftermarket filters. I am telling you to ask for filtration rating, burst pressure, and compatibility data. If the seller cannot give you those numbers, you are buying hope.
Surprise: good aftermarket parts are sometimes the right answer for older equipment. Link-Belt cranes and excavators have long service lives. At some point, the original part may no longer be available. When that happens, OEM only is not a useful answer.
A reputable aftermarket supplier can reverse-engineer a bracket, seal kit, or swing gear part and do it well. I have also seen more problems from old OEM stock than from good aftermarket stock, because rubber and seals age even while they are still in the box. I used to believe anything with the original maker's name was automatically better. Now I check date codes and storage conditions on new old stock before I accept it.
Genuine Link-Belt parts come through a dealer network that can look up your machine serial, confirm the application, and tell you whether an updated part exists. Aftermarket parts can also come from good suppliers with real technical staff. But they can also come from an online listing with a stock photo and no phone number.
Before you buy from a non-genuine supplier, ask four questions:
In 2022, I began requiring data sheets and lot numbers for every aftermarket part we stock. Around 23 percent of suppliers could not provide a clear answer. That told me more than their marketing pages did.
The most expensive Link-Belt heavy equipment parts decision is often a hydraulic pump. On an excavator, the main pump powers every movement. On a crane, the pump system does even more. A pump failure is sometimes the pump's own fault, but it is often caused by contamination, the wrong oil, or a failed seal upstream.
Whether you buy a genuine pump or a remanufactured unit, ask for the pump serial number and the bench test report. A good rebuild should show flow, pressure, and temperature readings. A good independent shop will share those readings. If the answer is trust us, pass.

Start with a walk-around. Look for oil leaks, damaged hoses, cracked welds, and loose pins. Then set the machine on firm, level ground and use the blade for stability. Confirm the control pattern before moving. Many machines can be switched between ISO and SAE patterns; if you are not sure which one you are on, test in an open area.
When you dig, use the boom and arm for most of the work. Curling the bucket at the end of a pass is useful, but using bucket curl to pry is how pivot pins and seals get damaged. And if the hydraulics start making noise, stop. A new noise is usually the first sign that a pump or relief valve is struggling.
For current Link-Belt machines, I would buy genuine Link-Belt parts for anything hydraulic, electronic, or safety-related. The price difference is small compared with a failed component on a jobsite.
For older machines, or for filters, cutting edges, buckets, and non-safety wear items, a well-documented aftermarket part can be a reasonable choice. Ask for the documentation. Inspect the delivery. If the supplier treats a small order as a nuisance, walk away.
Here is the principle I want you to remember: small operators deserve the same technical support as large fleets. In my shop, a $300 order and a $30,000 order get checked with the same standard. The part does not know what the invoice says. It only knows whether it fits, works, and lasts.
