I get a version of this request at least twice a month.
Someone forwards me a link — a project manager, a foreman, sometimes our CFO — and says some version of "find me the Link-Belt 300 excavator specs" or "can you pull the Link-Belt excavator parts manual PDF." And every single time, my honest first answer is: depends what you're going to do with it.
I'm the office administrator at a 45-person site-work contractor. I handle purchasing — parts, short-term equipment rentals, dealer invoices — roughly $320K a year across about a dozen vendors. I report to operations on delivery dates and to finance on anything over five grand. I took over this desk in 2020, so I've had five full budget cycles of getting this wrong, and then getting it right.
What I've figured out is that "where do I find Link-Belt data" isn't one question. It's four different questions wearing the same search terms. Answer the wrong one and you burn a week — or order the wrong part and eat the restocking fee.
So before you dig, figure out which of these four you actually are:
1. The Fix-It Buyer — you already own the machine, something's broken, and you need the correct part number for your serial number.
2. The Spec-Sheet Shopper — you're comparing a 300-class machine for purchase or rental and you need real, current specs.
3. The Records Buyer — you need documentation: model year, serial ranges, valuation, insurance or resale paperwork.
4. The Investor — you're reading about crane company stock sentiment and wondering if it should affect a buying decision.

This is the one that actually costs money when you get it wrong, so I'll start here.
Search for a Link-Belt excavator parts manual PDF and you'll find a ton of "free download" pages. My experience: most of them are scans of an old revision, missing the exact assembly you need, or covering a serial range that isn't yours. The path that actually works: get the full serial off the plate, call the dealer's parts counter, and ask them to email you the parts breakdown page for the assembly you're repairing. I learned this the expensive way. Restocking fee, return freight, and the machine sat another four days waiting on the right kit. I still kick myself for that one — a two-minute phone call to the parts counter would have caught it before I spent anything.
Bottom line: serial number first, then the part number. Never the other way around.
If you're chasing "Link-Belt 300 excavator specs," you probably have a job in mind and you're trying to figure out whether the machine fits it. Here's the thing nobody tells you upfront: published specs are configuration-dependent.
A 300-class machine's operating weight, dig depth, and reach all shift with boom length, stick length, undercarriage width, counterweight, and what bucket is pinned on. The number on a marketing sheet is a ballpark, not a promise. If you're sizing a machine against a trench depth or a lift chart, you need the configuration you'd actually be running — not the headline figure.
Two sources are genuinely useful, and I use both:
What to compare like-for-like: operating weight, max dig depth, max reach at ground level, bucket breakout force, hydraulic flow, tail swing radius, and transport weight and width. That last pair matters because it decides whether you're pulling permits every time you move the machine. That's a cost that never shows up in the purchase comparison and always shows up in the budget.
One counterintuitive thing: for trenching in tight commercial lots or truck loading, tail swing radius usually matters more than dig depth, and it's the spec nobody asks about. A machine that can't swing without tagging a wall is a problem that no amount of reach fixes.
And rent one for a week on your actual job before you commit. It's close to a no-brainer, and people skip it constantly because the rental feels like money they're "wasting." Best money I've ever spent on a purchase decision, twice now.
This is the administrative version of the same problem, and honestly it's the closest to my actual job.
Start with the serial number plate on the machine — photograph it. Nine times out of ten, the arguments I get pulled into about a machine's year or configuration are solved by a photo of that plate.
For year of manufacture, go to the dealer or the OEM's own serial lookup. Third-party sites will usually get you close, but "close" is a problem when it's attached to an insurance claim or a resale listing. I'd rather have the authoritative answer and wait a day for it.
For valuation, pull the last 6–12 months of comparable auction results in your region rather than trusting a national average. Hours, condition, and regional demand move these numbers way more than the model name does. I'm not going to quote you a price here — regional auction data shifts constantly, and I'd just be making it up. Pull your own comps; it takes an afternoon.
For insurance, get the serial and the model year in writing from the dealer, and keep the spec sheet with your policy file. When something happens and the adjuster asks what the machine was, you want the answer to be a PDF, not your memory.
This one is different, and it's the one where I'd push back the hardest.
Two completely different people search for crane company stock sentiment. One is an investor. The other is a fleet buyer or dealer who stumbled onto an earnings article while researching a machine and is now wondering whether it should change their decision. If you're the investor, that's a separate conversation and I'm the wrong person to have it with.
If you're the buyer: stock sentiment is a one-quarter signal, and your ownership window is ten to fifteen years. Those aren't the same time horizon. Treating them like they are is how people talk themselves out of the right machine over a headline that's irrelevant before the machine is even delivered.
But — and this is the part most people get backwards — manufacturer financial health is not noise. It's just measured differently than sentiment is. Over a 15-year ownership life, what actually affects you is whether there's a North American parts depot, how dense the dealer network is within a few hundred miles of your yard, whether the product line is being wound down, and whether diagnostic and software support keeps getting updates.
So check fundamentals, not sentiment. Favorite shortcut: call your parts dealer and ask them directly. Parts people generally know what's coming before anything gets written up publicly. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, the answers I got over the phone told me more about long-term support than any article did.
A dealership that's 200 miles away and shrinking is a bigger deal-breaker than a bad quarter. That's the version of "stock sentiment" that should actually reach your desk.

Do you already own the machine? If yes, you're Scenario 1 (something's broken) or Scenario 3 (you need paperwork). If no, go to the next question.
Is your deadline tied to a job, or to a budget cycle? Job deadline with a machine down — Scenario 1, call the parts counter today. Budget cycle or a project that's still being planned — Scenario 2, and you have time to rent before you commit.
Is the question about a machine, or about money? If it's about a specific machine, it's Scenarios 1 through 3. If it's about a manufacturer's financials, it's Scenario 4 — and the answer there is fundamentals, not sentiment.
One last bit of honesty that doesn't fit anywhere else: if you arrived here searching "bob crane," you're almost certainly looking for the actor, or a guy named Bob who runs a crane somewhere. Different problem entirely, and I'm definitely the wrong person for it.
