Let me start with a sentence that doesn’t always win friends in dealer meetings: if your first question is “which Link-Belt is the best,” I’m going to slow you down before I sell you anything. Link-Belt builds dependable excavators—I approve them on a regular basis—but the “best” model only exists in relation to the job. That opinion has cost me a few quick sales over the years. It has also kept customers coming back, which I consider a fair trade.
For context, I’m a quality and compliance manager at a heavy equipment dealership. Somewhere in that range is a machine that fits your reach, digging depth, lifting capacity, transport rules, fuel budget and operator experience. None of those specs can be compared fairly in isolation.
Last summer, a contractor asked us for a larger Link-Belt excavator because he wanted extra counterweight for lifting. On the spec sheet, the bigger model won. On the actual site, the limiting factor was ground bearing pressure—not counterweight. The heavier machine couldn’t even use its full capacity without matting the access road. We ended up sending a smaller model for the first phase and keeping the larger unit for a later job where the ground was stable. It wasn’t a quality problem. It was a matching problem.
I don’t have hard data on industry-wide misapplication rates, but based on our own rental fleet reviews, my sense is roughly one in four first-time buyers or renters chooses a machine class that is larger or smaller than their main task requires. Over-specing wastes money on fuel, transport and undercarriage wear. Under-specing leads to premature component failures. A good dealer should be willing to tell you which one you’re about to do.
The “link belt long reach excavator” is the machine I get the most enthusiastic calls about. I understand why. Watching a long-reach unit pull material from 70 feet away is impressive. But I approve those machines for a specific set of jobs, not for general excavation. If someone is buying one for occasional “maybe someday” work, I usually talk them out of it.

If your main job is digging a 3- to 6-meter-deep foundation, loading trucks, or busting rock, I would not recommend a long reach excavator. A standard Link-Belt excavator with the right stick and bucket will do that faster, with less fuel and lower maintenance cost.
I’m not a structural engineer, so I can’t tell you whether a long reach boom is safe for every demolition sequence. What I can tell you from a quality control perspective is to verify the exact attachment configuration, counterweight requirement and lifting chart revision before the machine leaves the yard. That’s where I’ve seen deals fall apart: the brochures say “long reach capable,” but the actual machine is set up for standard duty and requires a boom conversion. (Surprise, surprise—nobody budgets for the conversion.)
The same logic applies to the classic “backhoe vs excavator” comparison. I don’t answer that question with a brand name first. I answer it with the work pattern. A backhoe—usually a backhoe loader—is genuinely better when you need road mobility, compact size, quick setup and the ability to switch between digging, loading and light grading in the same day. A track excavator is better when you need deep vertical walls, continuous production, high breakout force and efficient truck loading over an eight-hour shift.
I should add that the rest of the site is part of the decision too. I get calls asking whether a concrete mixer or a decky loader is the right purchase, and my first question is usually: what does the rest of the material flow look like? A concrete mixer solves the problem of wet concrete delivery. A loader—whatever regional nickname you use—moves material to the work point. Neither one digs the trench. They support the machine that does. Comparing them head-to-head without defining the job sequence is like comparing an excavator to a generator: both are useful, but they don’t replace each other.
The objection I hear most is: “We know it’s not ideal, but we’ll make it work.” That worries me more than any spec question. I have been burned by that sentence myself. In one case, I knew I should have confirmed the replacement stick’s pin size before signing the delivery acceptance, but we were behind schedule and the machine came from a trusted supplier. So I skipped the last verification step. That was the one time it mattered. The pins were wrong, the machine sat idle for a day and a half, and the rental customer never fully trusted our inspection process again. It wasn’t a catastrophic failure. It was an expensive reminder that overconfidence is a quality issue.
That’s why I don’t treat Link-Belt models or any other machine as universally “good” or “bad.” I treat them as appropriately applied or not. If I recommend a standard excavator instead of a long reach, it’s not because the long reach is a bad product. It’s because I want the machine to earn its keep. The same honesty applies when someone really does need the long reach: I’d rather spec the longest factory-supported configuration than bolt on a questionable extension and hope for the best.
If you ask me whether you need a Link Belt long reach excavator, a standard Link-Belt excavator, a backhoe loader or a concrete mixer attachment, my answer is always the same: define the work envelope first. Define the material, the depth, the horizontal reach, the transport route and the hours per week. Then choose the machine class that fits. Only then does the model comparison become useful.
For most owners, I approve a standard Link-Belt excavator with the correct boom, stick, bucket and counterweight package. That combination is what protects your uptime. For the minority who genuinely work at the edge of reach, the Link Belt long reach excavator is an excellent specialist. The point is not to talk you out of Link-Belt. The point is to talk you out of the wrong Link-Belt. Buy the machine that survives inspection on year two, not just the one that wins the brochure comparison on day one.
