But I'd argue that the word “aftermarket” is dangerously broad. There are remanufactured parts that meet OEM specs. There are low-cost imports that aren't even close. They're sold in the same catalog page, often with the same photo. If you don't know which one you're buying, you're taking a risk with zero visibility.
Here's the rule I follow when a machine is down and the clock is ticking: get the genuine part number first. Then compare the aftermarket option. If the price difference is large, ask what spec the aftermarket part is made to. If the supplier can't answer, that's a red flag. If they can, you can make an informed decision. The problem isn't choosing aftermarket; it's choosing it without information.
